The Sun’s Herald, 4/30/2024, Oxidized Argentium Silver

The crow’s head was sculpted in Rhinoceros3D (Rhino) and then printed through castable resin. In constructing the body and tail of the bird, I used the provided prototype and attached the individual feathers by hand. Utilizing the lost wax casting technique, these pieces were cast in Argentium Silver.

The Sun’s Herald was inspired by the Korean Kingdom, Goguryeo, and their legend of three-legged crow who lived in the sun. Based on the belief that crows were known to be messengers of the heavenly gods, the three legs symbolize the relationship between heaven, earth, and man. In addition to this, the number three represents positive and favorable numbers and were not divisible like even numbers which contributed to the symbol of infinity. These elements brought the quality of auspicious charm to the bird whose feathers slowly became enveloped in its dark coat.
