Are We Yearning for a Connection?

Illuminating from the middle of the room are twelve panels with waves of neurons passing through the air. Each panel is composed of four sheets of etched mirrored acrylics, held together with 3D printed caps. On each panel are fragmented images of my retina, allowing for reflection and meta-cognition. Between each of the panels are clear acrylic sheets, formed and shaped to replicate waves. On those waves, neurons are in motion, reaching for each other through the panels.

What does a déjà vu feel like when you meet someone? Maybe you have already interacted with this person before, or maybe you know this person through your friend.

In this work, light passes through the panels and reflects the engraved images to its surroundings as it touches and connects neurons, forming a network. Mirror neurons allow for us to understand each other’s shared emotions through our keen observations of each other.

With digitally fabricated materials, I embody the deep connectedness we feel as humans and as creatives. As an artist, I not only transform the physical space, but also the emotional presence of light, intimacy, and empathy.
